About Metairie LA

The suburban community of Metairie is located in Southeastern Louisiana, less than nine miles from New Orleans. Covering a land area of about 23.2 square miles, this addition to Jefferson Parish has a population of about 140,000 residents. Interstate 10 and Highway 90 provide commuter access to and from the area. For those who depend on air travel for business or pleasure, Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is just eight miles away.

One of Metairie's notable residential neighborhood, Country Club Gardens, is one of the most popular the City of New Orleans because of its physical location and the street network. The Central Business District of Metairie is located on Causeway Blvd. near Lake Ponchartrain. Employment opportunities within Metairie are widespread and bountiful.

Residents with children from grades K-12 will find educational amenities through the Jefferson Parish Unified School District. Those in pursuit of a degree in higher education will find five local university and college campuses with an additional seven institutions of higher learning just outside of Metairie, including the University of New Orleans and the Tulane and Loyola University Campuses.

Metairie is home to Lakeside Shopping Center, the highest grossing mall in the New Orleans metropolitan area. Popular sites to see in and about the area include Lafreniere Park, the historical French Quarter and Jackson Square, Preservation Hall, Aquarium of the Americas and the Audubon Zoo. Temperatures in the region range from the mid-40s in the winter to the low to mid 90s in the summer.

The real estate market in Metairie is composed of primarily single-family detached homes with a good number of townhouse and condominium properties on the market as well. A three-bedroom, two bath home ranges from the low $100,000s to $200,000 and up depending on location. Slightly larger properties with four-bedrooms and three baths can be acquired in the mid-$200,000s to the mid-$300,000s. Larger estate properties with five or more bedrooms start in the low $400,000s and to $1 million and up. Prices for condominiums range from the low $100,000s for a two-bedroom, one bath townhouse and can exceed the high $100,000s for a three-bedroom unit with two-and-one-half baths. Empty lots of land are available for those who wish to construct their dream homes from custom designs. A quarter acre of residential land can be purchased for about $200,000.

Metairie Real Estate Stats and Trends for the week of April 20th, 2020: homes priced around $244,406 compared to $244,406 the previous week, to remain steady with no change in listing price.  For Monday, April 20th, the current national mortgage rate for a 30 year fixed mortgage is 4.51%; the 15 year fixed rate is at 3.90%. For a loan larger than conventional conforming loans, or 'jumbo' loan, the 30 year rate is 4.41%, while the 15 year jumbo rate currently is at 4.12%.
